When seam taping is not possible, you can get really water resistant seams by sewing the fabric with Rasant polycotton thread as it's cotton surface will swell when wet and fills up the thread holes in the fabric.

When sewing a tarp we recommend medium size thread (approx. #70) and #70 to #80 needle. So the needle holes will be minimal.
